April 7th, 2010 by Courtney
Dolph Briscoe Unit was established in 1992 and is located in Dilley, Frio County, Texas. It is a male prison with a capacity of 1,342. It has ambulatory medical and dental services, food crops, a food bank program and a furniture factory. It is named for the 41st Governor of Texas, who was in office between 1973 and 1979. It is a minimum to medium security prison.
In 1988, a female corrections officer was terminated after a “whistle-blowing” incident in which she reported the use of excessive force in the prison. She subsequently sued the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and lost. A possible sexual relationship with the inmate who was the victim in the excessive force incident was cited.
In March 2007 a corrections officer at Briscoe Unit was assaulted and it resulted in a month-long lockdown. Another month-long lockdown occurred in August 2007 as a result of a riot.
The prison is often talked about in a good light compared to other prisons in the state of Texas.
Recently, onApril 6th, two inmates escaped from Briscoe Unit on foot. They apparently cut through a fence and ran. The inmates, Jose Bustos-Diaz and Octavio Ramos Lopez, are still on the run.
